I am sure that for most kids, both then and now, the acquisition of “spending money” has always been a problem. Yes, in our family we were paid an allowance for drying the dishes and other such small household tasks. For the most part, my allowance covered the “necessities” such as ice cream cones and vanilla Cokes at Espy’s, but not much more. For the diligent, there were lawns to cut in the summertime and snowy walks to be cleared in the winter, but those jobs required considerably more industry than I ever seemed to be able to muster, at least on a continuing basis.
